After 11 years in architecture, Chimso Onwuegbu decided to pursue his long-time goal of owning an architecture firm. As a relatively new architectural firm trying to succeed during a very difficult economic environment, Onwuegbu Architecture decided to pursue government contracts as a way to increase potential clients.
"By integrating the client into each design process, we strive to provide unique solutions to each project and its individual circumstances."
In looking into the different avenues for success with the government, Onwuegbu determined certification with the United States SBA 8(a) would provide a great avenue for contract procurement. It was during this process he was introduced to Beverly King with the SBDC for help refining the firm’s business plan.
In working with her and the SBDC, Onwuegbu gained invaluable insight into the refinements necessary to create an exceptional business plan. In addition, he developed and is now using several financial analysis and forecasting tools based on information provided by the SBDC.
Onwuegbu said his firm’s experience with the SBDC was nothing short of enlightening and provided more than expected. Onwuegbu Architecture is now a certified 8(a) firm providing a full array of services including feasibility studies; programming; 3D renderings; construction administration; LEED administration; specifications; construction documents; and conceptual, architectural, sustainable, build and interior design.
"Our philosophy is one of removing the ego from the design process, thus allowing for a collaborative environment, which we believe fosters the best project possible."

As the company portfolio grows and the economic recovery continues, Onwuegbu said he looks to the future with a bright outlook, with King and the SBDC partially to thank for that.
The Utah SBDC network is comprised of 11 regional centers hosted by Utah colleges and universities. The centers serve entrepreneurs and small businesses across the state. The centers are funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
